Sun, Sea and Mermaids

I love photographing people, and parades are generally a great place to do that: the parade goers are there to be seen and are happy to be photographed, a sea of smiling faces. There are many special parades in New York City, but the Coney Island Mermaid Parade is my favorite—away from the crowded canyons of Manhattan, it’s a small town affair, approachable, less crowded, open to the sky. The mermaids and mermen dress, or undress, flamboyantly, and it is always a colorful delight.

Here is a selection of my snapshots from this year’s parade—see the full set on Flickr.
